SURVIVAL GUIDE: APPLICANTS/NEW HIRES
Sep 06, 2023

While waiting for the union to call you it is a good idea to make sure you have all of the required tools (http://ia33.org/index.cfm?zone=/unionactive/view_article.cfm&homeID=230686), a flashlight and multi-tools aren’t required, but are a good idea.  It is a good idea to have these in a bag and ready to go at a moment’s notice.  You will also be required to bring identification with you to fill out an I-9 form.  A current passport is the only document you need to bring if you know your social security number, but most people bring a driver's license and a social security card.

Wait for us to call you, we will initiate first contact.  Keep your phone by you at all times.  Your first phone call may come at any time, day or night, and the call steward is not likely to leave a message. Write down your call information and take it with you.  What time do you start? Which department?  This is all the information you are expected to know when you arrive at the venue.  It is also not a bad idea to have $20 cash on hand, most of our venues offer free parking, but not all of them.

A ‘call time’ of 10:30 PM does not mean that you are pulling into the parking garage at 10:25.  Give yourself plenty of time to walk from the garage carrying tools, check in with security, find your department head and fill out paperwork. 45 minutes to an hour should provide a sufficient bumper, but remember, traffic is not an excuse to be late. ‘Call time’ is not time to arrive, it is the time to start working.

You will be in a hectic environment filled with a mixture of other new people and people who have been doing this for years.  The best thing to do is keep a cool head and do as instructed by the person or people you are assigned to.  You should be dressed cleanly.  This does not necessarily mean a suit and tie, but your clothing should be clean and in good repair.  Clothing without logos is preferable, but logos that are small and tasteful are acceptable.  Long pants are preferred, including jeans, but shorts are okay for working outdoors in the summer months.  If you receive a call that specifies “show blacks”, this means long black pants and a black shirt.  NO LOGOS.  It is a good idea to keep a set of show-blacks in your car at all times.
